Types of gynecologic cancer we treat

Through our oncology program in North Texas, patients have access to treatments for all types of gynecologic cancer. Your specialist will walk you through all of your treatment options and create a custom plan tailored to your specific diagnosis and medical history. Your physician may also incorporate care through our gynecology program.

Cervical cancer

We treat all types of cervical cancers, including:

  • Squamous cell carcinomas, which affect skin cells and are the most common type of cervical cancer, accounting for roughly 90 percent of cases
  • Adenocarcinomas, which form in the tissue found in blood vessels and organs
  • Adenosquamous carcinomas (mixed carcinomas), which have features of both types of cervical cancer

Ovarian cancer

We treat all types of ovarian cancer, including:

  • Epithelial ovarian tumors, which develop in the outer surface of the ovaries and are the most common type of ovarian cancer
  • Ovarian germ cell tumors, which make up about 2 percent of all ovarian cancers and develop from the cells that produce the eggs (ova)
  • Ovarian stromal tumors, which account for about 1 percent of all ovarian cancers and often cause abnormal vaginal bleeding

Uterine cancer

We treat all types of cancers of the uterus, including:

  • Uterine leiomyosarcomas, which are the most common type of uterine sarcomas and can grow and spread quickly
  • Endometrial stromal sarcomas, which are a rare type of tumor and are often hard to detect and treat
  • Undifferentiated sarcomas, which can grow and spread quickly
  • Benign uterine tumors (fibroid tumors), which may need to be removed if they cause problems, such as pain, bleeding and bladder or bowel issues

Endometrial cancer

We treat all types of cancers of the endometrium (the innermost lining layer of the uterus), also called endometrial carcinomas, including:

  • Endometrioid carcinomas, which are the most common type of endometrial adenocarcinoma
  • Uterine carcinosarcomas, which have features of both endometrial carcinomas and uterine sarcomas

Vaginal cancer

We treat all types of vaginal cancer, including:

  • Squamous cell carcinomas, which account for nearly 90 percent of ovarian cancer cases and tend to develop slowly over time
  • Adenocarcinomas, which make up most of all other vaginal cancer cases
  • Very rare vaginal cancers, including melanomas (skin cancers) and vaginal sarcomas (tumors found in bones or soft tissues)

Vulvar cancer

We treat all types of cancers of the vulva, including:

  • Squamous cell carcinomas, such as keratinizing squamous cell carcinomas (the most common type, often seen in older women) and the types more often found in younger women and associated with the human papillomavirus virus (HPV)
  • Adenocarcinomas, such as Bartholin gland cancer (cancer affecting glands found in the vagina) and Paget's disease (a disease affecting bone health) of the vulva
  • Less common vulvar cancers, including melanomas and sarcomas

Gynecologic cancer treatment options

Cancer treatment options available at Medical City Arlington, Medical City Dallas and Medical City Plano include gynecologic cancer surgery, such as hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) and excision (partial removal of an organ), and nonsurgical options, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
