Blood cancer
Blood cancer occurs when stem cells in bone marrow make uncontrolled, abnormal blood cells. They keep your blood from fighting infections and slows excessive bleeding control. We have many treatments, such as chemo, radiation therapy and stem cell transplants.

Blood cancers we treat
We offer individualized blood cancer treatment for patients with all types of blood cancer, including:
- Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL): This blood and bone marrow cancer affects white blood cells, which help prevent infections and illnesses.
- Acute myeloid leukemia (AML): With this rare type of cancer, the body produces abnormal white blood cells, red blood cells or platelets (blood cells that form clots to stop bleeding). With AML, patients have too many immature white blood cells. AML can cause easy bruising and fatigue.
- Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL): One of the most common types of leukemia, CLL also targets the white blood cells. However, CLL is generally less severe than ALL.
- Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML): This type of leukemia progresses slowly. It is rare among adults and even rarer among children. With CML, patients have too many mature white blood cells.
- Hodgkin lymphoma (HL): Lymphoma starts in the white blood cells and affects the lymph system, which is part of the immune system. Since the lymph system runs through many areas of the body, HL can develop almost anywhere.
- Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL): HL and NHL are similar, but with NHL, no Reed-Sternberg cells (large, abnormal lymphocytes) are present. NHL is more common than HL.
- Myeloma: Myeloma forms in plasma cells, which are a type of white blood cells. This type of cancer affects bone marrow and weakens bones as the cancer overcrowds healthy plasma cells.
Blood cancer treatment options
The oncohematologists—doctors with training in cancer care and the diagnosis and treatment of blood diseases—at Medical City Healthcare hospitals offer a full range of treatment options, including surgical and nonsurgical care. Your cancer treatment may involve surgery and a noninvasive treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
CAR T-cell therapy
CAR T-cell therapy is an innovative immunotherapy that helps your immune system recognize and fight cancer. T-lymphocytes (T-cells) are a type of cell responsible for killing abnormal cells.
First, white blood cells are collected through a process called "apheresis." Then, the T-cells are isolated from other blood cells. Medical professionals in a special facility then modify those T-cells to help them recognize and target cancer cells. Finally, cancer specialists reinfuse the new "fighter" T-cells into the body
Bone marrow transplants
Medical City's Blood and Marrow Transplant Program has been accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy since 2004.
Medical City Dallas has a bone marrow transplant program for adults, and Medical City Children's Hospital has a pediatric bone marrow program. These oncology centers offer bone marrow transplants, also called stem cell transplants, blood and marrow transplants or bone marrow transplants, to help treat blood cancer.
A bone marrow transplant replaces damaged bone marrow. For patients with blood cancer, a bone marrow transplant can be used to replace damaged marrow following a high, targeted dose of chemotherapy.
Cancer support
We know a cancer diagnosis affects more than your physical health. That's why cancer support groups are a major part of cancer care at Medical City Healthcare. If you've just learned about a cancer diagnosis, are supporting a loved one through treatment or are transitioning into survivorship, we can connect you with a local community for ongoing care.
