Gastrointestinal cancers affect the digestive system. These can include esophageal, stomach, colon, rectal and pancreatic cancers.

Types of gastrointestinal cancer we treat

We treat a variety of cancerous and noncancerous tumors affecting the digestive system. At Medical City Arlington, Medical City Dallas, Medical City Fort Worth and Medical City Plano, you'll have access to a team of oncologists and oncology certified nurses to answer any questions you have and recommend treatment options based on your unique diagnosis, medical history and wellness goals.

Bile duct cancer

We treat all types of bile duct cancer (also called cholangiocarcinoma), including:

  • Adenocarcinoma, which is cancer affecting the tissue found in blood vessels and organs
  • Squamous carcinoma, which is a type of skin cancer
  • Sarcoma, which is a bone or soft tissue cancer

Esophageal cancer

We treat both types of esophageal cancer, which are:

  • Squamous cell carcinoma, which forms on the inside layer of the upper esophagus and accounts for 50 percent of all esophageal cancer
  • Adenocarcinoma, which develops in glandular cells and typically starts in the lower esophagus

Gallbladder cancer

We treat all types of gallbladder cancer, including:

  • Adenocarcinoma, which accounts for nearly all gallbladder cancer diagnoses
  • Rare gallbladder cancers, including squamous cell carcinoma and carcinosarcoma (a cancerous tumor with a mix of carcinoma and sarcoma)

Liver cancer

We offer treatment for all types of liver cancer, including:

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is the most common form of liver cancer in adults
  • Fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma, which is a rare type of HCC most often seen in women who are 35 years old or younger
  • Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer), which accounts for 10–20 percent of cancers that start in the liver
  • Angiosarcoma and hemangiosarcoma, which are two types of rare liver cancer often linked to toxic substance exposure
  • Hepatoblastoma, which is a rare type of liver cancer typically seen in children who are 4 years old or younger

What You Should Know About Liver Cancer

Pancreatic cancer

We treat every type of pancreatic cancer, including:

  • Endocrine tumors, also called pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs), which make up about 7 percent of pancreatic cancers
  • Exocrine tumors, which are the most common type of pancreatic cancer and include:
    • Ductal adenocarcinoma, which is a tumor that develops in the ducts of the pancreas
    • Acinar adenocarcinoma, which is a tumor that develops in the pancreatic glands
    • Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN), which is a noncancerous tumor that grows within the pancreatic ducts and can become cancerous if not treated

Stomach cancer

We treat every type of stomach cancer (also called gastric cancer), including:

  • Adenocarcinoma, which is a cancerous tumor that forms in mucus-secreting glands and is the most common type of stomach cancer
  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), which are intestinal tract tumors that typically affect adults between 40 and 70 years old
  • Lymphoma, which develops in the infection-fighting cells of the immune system
  • Carcinoid tumors, which are a type of neuroendocrine tumor that usually begin in the digestive tract or lungs

Gastrointestinal cancer care

We offer a variety of treatment options for gastrointestinal cancer. Your custom care plan may feature gastrointestinal cancer surgery, including organ transplants as an option in certain cases, and nonsurgical cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
