Bariatric surgery recovery
Most patients recover from weight loss surgery within one to two weeks. While it is usually recommended that you can return to physical activity as soon as you feel able, we suggest speaking with your doctor to determine what is best for you.
The Bariatric & Metabolic Institute in Dallas offers diet and nutrition resources to help you create healthy and sustainable changes to achieve your weight loss goals. After your surgery, it's crucial to follow the diet instructions your doctor gives you. Some general diet guidelines for weight loss success are:
- Eat three meals a day
- Avoid carbonated beverages, high-calorie nutritional supplements, high-fat foods and foods with a high sugar content (more than five grams of sugar per serving)
- When eating solid foods, chew each bite 25 to 30 times
- Do not drink fluids while eating, and wait 30 minutes after eating to drink fluids
- Do not use straws
- Take vitamins and supplements as recommended
