Types of surgery we offer
You can count on the surgeons at our hospital to deliver the personalized surgical care you need. We offer advanced surgeries including:
Bariatric surgery
Medical City Dallas’ Bariatric & Metabolic Institute has the longest continually running bariatric program in North Texas, offering bariatric surgery for obesity since 1979.
Robot-assisted bariatric surgeries available at Medical City Dallas include:
- Gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y)
- Sleeve gastrectomy
Gallbladder surgery
We specialize in single incision, virtually scarless, robot-assisted gallbladder surgery. Gallbladder conditions treated at Medical City Dallas include:
- Biliary colic
- Cholecystitis (acute and chronic)
- Choledocholithiasis
- Cholangitis
- Gallbladder abscess
- Gallbladder cancer
- Gallbladder polyps
- Gallstones
- Gallstone ileus
- Gallstone pancreatitis
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) surgery
GERD causes acid or other stomach contents to back up (or move backward) into the esophagus, causing symptoms of heartburn. The reflux irritates the esophagus, which can lead to permanent damage over time.
Specialists at our hospital offer a robot-assisted anti-reflux surgery called Nissen fundoplication.
Hiatal hernia procedures
A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach moves up into the chest cavity through a small opening in the diaphragm. This condition can push stomach acid into the esophagus, causing GERD. We use single-incision robotic surgery to treat:
- Sliding hiatal hernia
- Fixed hiatal hernia
- Complicated hiatal hernia
Gynecologic surgery
If you need surgery to treat a gynecologic condition, you may be a candidate for robotic surgery. Conditions we treat include:
- Endometriosis/adenomyosis
- Excessive menstrual bleeding
- Uterine fibroids
- Vaginal prolapse
- Gynecologic cancers
Single-incision robotic hysterectomy
Medical City Dallas hospital was the first in North Texas to perform a single-site robotic hysterectomy. This procedure is performed through one tiny incision in the navel and results in minimal scarring. The surgery can be performed in approximately one hour with a typical hospital stay of 24 hours.
Lung biopsy
Medical City Dallas uses a minimally invasive robot to diagnose lung cancer, featuring an ultra-thin, easily maneuverable catheter that moves 180 degrees in all directions.
This helps doctors reach nodules in any airway segment within the lung. The robot's flexible biopsy needle passes through very tight bends via the catheter to collect tissue in the peripheral lung. It enables a more precise biopsy and a more effortless surgical experience.
Thoracic surgery
Standard thoracic surgery requires a large incision that cuts through large muscles, causing many months of pain and immobility. However, robotic surgery allows your surgeon to make smaller incisions, resulting in a quicker recovery time and less pain.
Thoracic procedures we offer include:
- Bi-lobectomy and lobectomy
- Pneumonectomy
- Stereotactic radiosurgery
- Esophageal diverticulectomy
- Esophagectomy
- Bullectomy
- Chest wall resection/reconstruction
- Mediastinal resection
- Mediastinoscopy
- Pericardial drainage
- Pleurodesis
- Pleural (chronic) catheter insertion
- Sublobar wedge resection

Urologic surgery
Urologic (or urological) surgery refers to surgery performed on the male and female urinary tract organs and male reproductive organs. Urologic surgery is performed for cancer as well as a range of non-cancerous (benign) urologic conditions.
Minimally invasive urologic surgery is used to treat:
- Prostate cancer
- Kidney cancer
- Kidney disorders
- Bladder cancer
- Urinary obstruction
Excellence in robotic surgery
Robotics surgeons at Medical City Dallas perform more than 1,200 robotic surgeries each year. Several are designated epicenter surgeons, which means they have been selected to teach the latest robotic techniques and procedures to other general surgeons from around the country. In August 2023, the hospital celebrated the completion of its 20,000th robotic surgery, a milestone that makes it one of the busiest programs in the region. This achievement underscores an unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation by our physicians and care teams.
Benefits of robotic procedures
Robot-assisted surgery is an effective alternative to traditional open and laparoscopic operations. It allows your surgeon to make precise movements through one or more tiny incisions.
Benefits of robot-assisted surgery may include:
- Shorter hospital stay
- Reduced blood loss and transfusions
- Reduced pain and discomfort
- Faster recovery time
- Reduced risk of infection
- Less scarring
- Greater sparing of nerves
