Wound care

Wound care involves medical interventions to heal a wound after injury. Specialized treatment is provided for wounds that are nonhealing or refuse to heal on their own. A vital aspect of treatment includes learning how to properly dress and care for a wound.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for healing wounds

Medical City Dallas offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which helps speed up the healing process of chronic wounds. This noninvasive procedure puts the patient in a specially designed chamber at increased atmospheric pressure. HBOT therapy can be used for patients with the following conditions:

  • Arterial wounds and insufficiency
  • Compromised skin grafts or flaps
  • Confirmed or suspected osteomyelitis
  • Crush injuries
  • Diabetic wounds of the lower extremities
  • Soft tissue radionecrosis and osteoradionecrosis

The hyperbaric chamber, filled with 100 percent oxygen, provides body tissues with an increase in oxygen concentration, which helps grow new blood vessels in areas of the body with decreased circulation.

If you have a chronic or complex wound, including one that won't heal or only heals minimally for a year or more, it should be addressed quickly. The most common wounds we treat are diabetic foot ulcers and chronic nonhealing wounds.

What to expect at your appointment

Following a physician referral to the Wound Care Center, an examination helps determine how to best treat the wound and identify any underlying issues causing it. Tests, including laboratory evaluation, radiology, transcutaneous oxygen testing or vascular studies, may also be ordered.

Many health insurance plans cover wound care and hyperbaric treatments. Call the center at (972) 566-4868 for more information. The center is located in Building C, Suite 239 on the Medical City Dallas campus.
