Heart transplant criteria
If you have a specific heart condition and all other medical therapies have failed, a heart transplant may be an appropriate treatment option. Having one of these heart conditions may qualify you for a heart transplant:
- Cardiomyopathy
- Myocarditis
- Congenital (present at birth) heart disease
- Postpartum cardiomyopathy
- Valvular heart disease
Heart transplant testing and evaluation
After you are deemed a potential heart transplant candidate, an initial evaluation is performed by a multidisciplinary team. Standard tests you may undergo include:
- Cardiac evaluation, functional stress test and right heart catheterization
- Blood work to evaluate major organ function
- Pulmonary evaluation with chest X-ray
- Abdominal sonogram and computed tomography (CT) scan of the head
Once you are considered eligible, you are placed on the national waiting list, managed by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).
