Whether you have cardiomyopathy or congenital heart disease, Medical City Healthcare provides comprehensive heart care. When this care includes heart transplant surgery, an experienced team at Medical City Heart Hospital is here to perform your evaluation and provide post-transplant recovery services.

Heart transplant criteria
If you have a specific heart condition and all other medical therapies have failed, a heart transplant may be an appropriate treatment option. Having one of these heart conditions may qualify you for a heart transplant:
- Congenital (present at birth) heart disease
- Postpartum cardiomyopathy
- Valvular heart disease
Heart transplant testing and evaluation
After you are deemed a potential heart transplant candidate, an initial evaluation is performed by a multidisciplinary team. Standard tests you may undergo include:
- Cardiac evaluation, functional stress test and right heart catheterization
- Blood work to evaluate major organ function
- Pulmonary evaluation with chest X-ray
- Abdominal sonogram and computed tomography (CT) scan of the head
Once you are considered eligible, you are placed on the national waiting list, managed by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).
Heart transplant recovery and support
Our transplant services program addresses the mental and emotional challenges of having a transplant. The Living Gift Support Group visits Medical City Healthcare facilities throughout the year to help transplant patients meet others who share their experiences and learn about community resources.
