Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
GERD is a condition that causes stomach acid and bile to travel from the stomach up to the esophagus. When untreated, it can damage the lining of the esophagus and potentially lead to esophageal cancers, such as adenocarcinoma.
Treatments for GERD include antacids, acid suppression drugs and diet changes. If conventional treatment methods are ineffective, you may be a candidate for GERD surgery (also called Nissen fundoplication).
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
IBS is a condition that causes distress along the digestive tract and can result in symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, mucus in stool and excess gas. Mild cases of IBS are often treated with diet and lifestyle changes. If your case is more severe, your doctor may prescribe medication.
