Summer’s here and it’s time to get your back in shape to safely head outdoors and get some exercise. Dr. Blake Staub, a neurosurgeon at Medical City Spine Hospital, shares his advice about strengthening your back to help prevent long-term injuries.
Dr. Staub suggests you start by getting a good stretch and making sure that your hamstrings and back are loose. Then you’ll want to strengthen your back and core. Here are a few of Dr. Staub’s tips:
- Do a plank exercise – strengthens your abdominal muscles without extending your back
- Walk – decreases inflammation and strengthens spine
- Swim – unloads on your joints and exercises your core
- Avoid red meat, sugar and alcohol – helps reduce inflammation in your joints
