American College of Surgeons recognizes cancer hospital for quality care
Plano – The Commission on Cancer (CoC) and the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), both quality programs of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), have renewed two accreditations to Medical City Plano Sarah Cannon Cancer Hospital.
“Cancer is a serious and often life-threatening disease. The American College of Surgeon’s accreditations reflect our ongoing commitment to providing high quality, compassionate care to the many patients who entrust us with their cancer treatment,” said Carlton Ulmer, Medical City Plano CEO. “These recognitions also distinguish Medical City Plano as the destination of choice for cancer care in our community.”
To earn a voluntary CoC accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care. As a CoC-accredited cancer center, Medical City Plano Sarah Cannon Cancer Hospital takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer as a complex group of diseases that requires consultation among surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists and other cancer specialists. This multidisciplinary partnership results in improved patient care. Medical City Plano has held this accreditation since 1994 and is renewed every 3 years.
When patients receive care at a CoC facility, they also have access to information on clinical trials and new treatments, genetic counseling and patient-centered services including psychosocial support, a patient navigation process and a survivorship care plan that documents the care each patient receives.
To achieve voluntary NAPBC accreditation, a breast center demonstrates compliance with the NAPBC standards focused on leadership, clinical services, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement. Breast centers seeking NAPBC accreditation undergo a site visit every three years. Medical City Plano has held this accrediting since 2011 and is also renewed every 3 years.
As a NAPBC-accredited center, the Sarah Cannon Cancer Hospital at Medical City Plano is committed to maintaining levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive, patient-centered, multidisciplinary care resulting in high-quality care for patients with breast disease. Patients receiving care at a NAPBC-accredited center have access to information on clinical trials and new treatments, genetic counseling, and patient centered services including psychosocial support and a survivorship care plan.
