Plano, TX — Medical City Plano has earned the Unit of Distinction Award (UOD) in an annual program that recognizes and rewards exemplary emergency departments at HCA Healthcare facilities.

The emergency services nursing staff at Medical City Plano, led by director Michelle Hooks, RN, ranked third among the top 10 emergency services teams selected to receive the 2018 Unit of Distinction recognition.

"The Unit of Distinction Award recognizes and celebrates excellence in emergency department nursing and acknowledges further that it takes a high-performing team of nurses, demonstrating a high level of commitment, to achieve these results," said Medical City Plano Chief Nursing Officer Sandy Haire, RN. "It is a great honor to be recognized as third among the elite top performing emergency departments across the enterprise."

The Unit of Distinction designation is achieved through measurable, outstanding performance in nursing leadership, professional practice and operations, and outcomes. Using a demanding list of criteria, more than 1,200 nursing units across the country were scored to determine which would receive the 2018 UOD honor, putting them in the top 5 percent of all HCA departments in their specialty. HCA has 185 hospitals in 21 U.S. states.

An important component of the program is company sponsorship of nurses to obtain national certification through programs accredited by the American Board of Nursing Specialties.
