Retired firefighter Don Davis is grateful for the care he received at the inpatient rehabilitation center at Medical City Decatur after surviving a nearly life-ending automobile accident.

On a rainy day in May 2024, the 77-year-old took his car for a spin and came upon a busy and treacherous intersection. Don crossed the intersection and was in a serious accident, crushed against the windshield. First responders were forced to use the “jaws of life” to extricate him from the vehicle.

His injuries were so severe that he was initially only able to communicate through his eyes, unable to speak or move his arms and legs. Don faced a daunting road to recovery to regain movement and strength. After about a month of recovering from his life-threatening injuries, he was referred to the inpatient rehabilitation center at Medical City Decatur for physical therapy.

Don made significant progress during rehabilitation through occupational, speech and physical therapy. Occupational therapy improved his arm and hand mobility, allowing him to dress and feed himself independently. Meanwhile, speech therapy enhanced his memory and ability to manage daily tasks.

After four weeks of inpatient rehabilitation, Don walked out of Medical City Decatur, thanking the rehab staff he called his Medical City Decatur “angels.” He is grateful to the team of skilled and compassionate caregivers who helped get him back on his feet and to his joyful life with his wife, children and eight grandchildren.
