Treatment for spine diseases and injuries

Treatment for back pain ranges from physical therapy and exercise to surgery. Each case is different, so we will tailor treatment to your individual needs.

Most people with back problems are not candidates for surgery. They may regain function through conservative forms of treatment. Your spine doctor will first explore noninvasive options, such as physical therapy, to treat or manage pain. If your pain remains or you have experienced a severe injury, you may need surgery.

Physical therapy and exercise

Exercise plays an important role in alleviating back pain and maintaining your lifestyle. Exercise stimulates the body's natural pain-controlling hormones and decreases pain perception. A physical therapist may be contacted to help you with your exercise program. The physical therapist can also teach you about ways to prevent further back injury.

Medication and pain management

Medicine may help control pain, inflammation, muscle spasms and sleep disturbance. For lower back pain, however, you may need other treatment options.

If basic medicine and pain management fail to control your back pain, your doctor may suggest an epidural steroid injection (ESI). An ESI involves placing a small amount of cortisone (a steroid hormone) into the bony spinal canal.

Cortisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory drug. Your doctor may use it to control inflammation surrounding the nerves. This can ease your pain. ESIs are reserved for cases where all other conservative measures have failed. ESIs may also be a last attempt to postpone surgery.

Surgery

Though rare, your doctor may recommend back surgery. In this case, fellowship-trained spine surgeons will use the most effective techniques possible to ease your pain.

If I am traveling from out of town, how can I coordinate a visit?

The first step is to call (972) 969-2020. From there, an agent will collect some information and transfer your call to the clinic. Once connected, inform the scheduling agent that you are traveling from out of town. We will then confirm your clinic appointment and provide directions.

How long can I expect to remain in the hospital after the procedure?

This depends on the type of procedure performed. However, most procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. For outpatient surgery, expect to leave the hospital on the same day as the treatment.

How can I schedule an appointment?

Call (972) 969-2010 to schedule your appointment. Here's what to expect:

  • A spine program agent will greet you and ask a few questions to effectively manage your call.
  • During regular business hours, your call will be transferred to our spine clinic to schedule an evaluation.
  • Once the appointment is confirmed, the scheduler will ask if you would like to speak with a spine expert before your visit.
  • The scheduler will provide the location of your clinic visit. We have many clinic locations, so your initial visit may not take place on the Medical City Las Colinas campus. All medical services after this evaluation will take place at our hospital.
  • Once your initial evaluation is complete, you'll receive a treatment plan. This plan may include various options, such as physical therapy, pain management and/or surgery.
  • After finalizing your customized care plan, the clinic scheduler will work with you to begin treatment.
