Senior drivers invited to Medical City CarFit event

Senior drivers can get assessed on how well their car fits them and make adjustments.

October 02, 2023

Denton, Texas —  Medical City Denton and trained CarFit volunteers will be on hand to assess how well drivers over 50 fit with their vehicles at a special event on Friday, Oct. 6. Drivers will be evaluated using a 12-point checklist, which can enhance safety. Among the items checked:

  • Correct position of driver’s seat
  • Driver’s ability to easily reach pedals
  • Proper adjustment of mirrors

The CarFit event is being held Friday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. — 12 noon in the parking lot by the pond in front of Medical City Denton’s Professional Building (3537 South I-35E). Call (940) 384-3294 to schedule an appointment.

“As we age, changes in our vision, flexibility, strength, range of motion and even size and height can affect how people sit in the car and reduce their control behind the wheel,” says Sydney Hanking, injury prevention coordinator at Medical City Denton. “By taking advantage of a CarFit evaluation, older drivers have more tools to ensure that they are operating their vehicle as safely as possible.”

Occupational therapists will provide personal consultation, if needed, to teach drivers how to maintain and improve their vehicle operation. Therapists can share localized information, including community resources for exercise, nutrition and other programs to help keep seniors healthy, which contributes to driver safety and the safety of others.
