Fort Worth, Texas — In observance of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, Medical City Fort Worth is hosting a Colorectal Cancer Awareness Education Seminar to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and prevention of the disease. The event will be hosted on Thursday, March 28th, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Colorectal cancer, also known as colon cancer, is a disease in which cells in the colon or rectum grow out of control. While it is the third leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the U.S., it is highly preventable with routine screenings beginning at age 45.

"Screenings and early detection are crucial to saving lives," says Sarah Ochieng, oncology nurse navigator at Medical City Fort Worth. "Preventive healthcare services like colorectal screening can make a difference, and we're here to support individuals in taking proactive steps towards their health.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), many adults wait too long to get screened for colorectal cancer, leading to delayed detection and treatment. The majority of colorectal cancers occur after age 50, making routine screenings essential for early detection.

"We encourage everyone to learn about the different screening test options available and talk to their healthcare providers about the best test for them," Ochieng added.
