Stroke

A stroke is a medical emergency where blood flow to the brain is either reduced or stopped, depriving brain tissue of essential oxygen and nutrients. A stroke may cause loss in brain function and affect movement and speech.

Your choice for comprehensive stroke treatment

The accomplished team of neurologists, neurosurgeons and specialized stroke nurses at Medical City Plano’s Brain & Spine Hospital are on call 24/7 for triage and immediate stroke treatment. They provide advanced neurological care for both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes.

Signs of a stroke include:

  • Dizziness
  • Severe headache
  • Loss of vision
  • Confusion
  • Paralysis or numbness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Slurred speech and trouble repeating a simple sentence

Minimally invasive clot retrieval devices

Only three to four percent of ischemic stroke patients can be treated with intravenous (IV) tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), a standard clot-busting medication. This is because most stroke patients arrive at the hospital after the time window (approximately three hours from the time symptoms begin) for safely administering tPA has passed.

When this happens, brain specialists use minimally invasive clot retrieval devices to minimize or reverse brain damage in stroke patients.

This catheter-based technology physically removes the clot by allowing the neurologist to use real-time 3D image guidance to clear the way for blood flow to the brain. It also extends the time window for treatment—up to 12 hours after the onset of stroke symptoms.

Advanced hemorrhagic stroke treatment

Medical City Plano was the first hospital in Collin County to offer aneurysm coiling. This is a minimally invasive, catheter-based procedure in which thin metal spring-like coils are placed inside the aneurysm to prevent it from rupturing during a hemorrhagic stroke.

We also offer aneurysm clipping, a surgical procedure in which a neurosurgeon places a clip on the outside of the aneurysm to physically disconnect it from the artery.

Fast stroke treatment with remote presence robots

The stroke specialists at our hospital use a mobile, remote presence robot to expedite stroke evaluation and treatment. This allows physicians to remotely connect to the robot from anywhere, anytime, and perform a full neurological exam.

Neurologists at our hospital also use the robot to:

  • Discuss a patient's status at the nurses' station
  • Observe patient behavior
  • Review X-rays and computed tomography (CT) scans
  • Discuss care with the patient and/or family members
  • Return to the nurses' station to give orders or discuss next steps

Lifesaving stroke education

The registered nurse stroke educators are dedicated to informing you about the signs and symptoms of stroke. Recognizing a stroke quickly and calling 911 can help save a life and preserve the stroke patient's brain function.

Medical City Plano, in partnership with the Joe Niekro Foundation, sponsors a Stroke Support Group. The group meets at 3 pm on the second Monday of each month in the dining room of Building D. For more information, contact Holly Henderson.
