Pediatric anesthesia

The board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists at Medical City Frisco provide expert anesthesia care to our pediatric patients. The pediatric anesthesiology team will meet with you and your child before surgery to explain what type of anesthesia your child will receive and how it will be administered. They will also answer any questions you may have and ask you to sign an informed-consent form, giving them authorization to administer anesthesia.

Pediatric advanced life support

The pediatric nurses at Medical City Frisco are certified in pediatric advanced life support (PALS), with specialized training to recognize and treat an infant or child at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest. PALS-certified nurses are able to resuscitate and stabilize an infant or child in cardiopulmonary arrest and provide advanced care to pediatric patients.

Pediatric plastic surgery

Our pediatric plastic surgery center is dedicated to providing the advanced care that your child deserves by using a team approach. This includes surgeons who are board-certified and trained specifically in vascular anomalies and laser surgery.

Our hospital also provides access to a specialized group of physicians who offer the highest quality in craniofacial reconstruction surgeries. Craniofacial reconstruction is a procedure that involves reshaping or repairing the face and skull to repair abnormalities caused by genetic disorders, birth defects or injuries.

Craniofacial anomalies

Craniofacial anomalies (CFA) are a diverse group of deformities in the growth of the head and facial bones. These abnormalities are congenital (present at birth) and can range from mild to severe, with some requiring surgery.

Cleft lip/palate

Cleft lip and cleft palate are facial and oral deformities that occur very early in pregnancy, typically while the baby is developing inside the womb.

Clefting occurs when there is not enough tissue in the mouth or lip area and the tissue that is available does not join together properly. This results in a physical split or separation in the lip or the roof of the mouth.

The pediatric plastic surgery team offers the following specialized treatments and services for cleft lip and palate:

Nasoalveolar molding (a non-surgical way to reshape the gums) for infants with clefts of the lip and palate

Arteriovenous malformation (AVM)

An AVM is an abnormal connection between arteries and veins, which, in many cases, causes a birthmark. The surgeons are specialized in embolization, a nonsurgical, minimally invasive procedure that deliberately blocks off blood vessels and can reduce the size of the birthmark. Common AVMs include:

Preparing your child for surgery

When children are prepared and understand what to expect during a surgical procedure, they tend to feel more comfortable. You can help prepare your child for their procedure by discussing it in simple terms your child can understand. You can also help them by answering any questions they might have.

Before surgery

Dress your child in loose-fitting, comfortable clothing.
Bring a case for glasses, contacts and/or dental appliances.
Bring insurance card(s).
Bring a complete list of all medications your child is taking, including herbal and vitamin supplements.
A parent or guardian must bring the child to and from the procedure.
Plan to arrive two hours before surgery is scheduled to begin.
You and your child will meet with the anesthesiologist. Please let the anesthesiologist know if anyone in your family has had reactions to anesthesia.

During surgery

During surgery, you will wait in the waiting area for your child.
You will be given a pager so the staff can communicate with you as needed.
Virtual message screens are available to let you know where your child is located at all times.

After surgery

After surgery, your child’s surgeon will meet with you to discuss the outcome of the surgery. Soon after the discussion, your child will be taken to the post anesthesia care unit (PACU).
You will be able to go to the PACU and see your child once they are waking from anesthesia.
Depending on individual circumstances, a child may need to stay in the PACU for several hours of observation.
If your child is going home on the same day of surgery, you will be able to stay with them in the PACU until they have recovered.
You will be given instructions about your child’s diet, activities and medications after the surgery and any other care you may need to provide once your child is home.
