Stroke symptoms—act F.A.S.T.
Last year, 795,000 Americans experienced a stroke, and many of them did not seek treatment in time.
You can help save lives and improve stroke recovery by thinking F.A.S.T. Remembering what these letters represent can help you recognize the signs of a stroke so you can seek out treatment quickly.
- Face drooping — Does one side of the face droop or feel numb? If they try to smile, is it uneven?
- Arm weakness — Is one arm weak or numb? If they raise both arms, is one arm drifting downward?
- Speech difficulty — Is speech slurred? Are they unable to speak? Are people having trouble understanding them? Ask them to repeat a simple sentence, such as, "The sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly?
- Time to call 911 — If you or someone you know shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911. Go to the hospital immediately. Check the time, so you'll know when the first symptoms appeared.
