Inpatient physical therapy in Fort Worth, Texas
Some patients need specialized, skilled care while recovering strength and function after an injury, stroke, trauma, amputation, neurological disorder, orthopedic intervention or other health issue.
In those cases, Medical City Fort Worth offers rehabilitative inpatient services for physical, occupational and speech therapy, speech-language pathology and wound care.
Acute inpatient rehabilitation
To help patients reach optimum recovery, we provide comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation services and a supportive environment. The goal is to restore independence and ensure a seamless transition to follow-up and outpatient care when it's time to go home.
After a physician's order is received, patients are evaluated to determine their physical status and functional ability. Experienced therapists provide assessment and education, working with the patient, their family, physicians and other medical staff, to develop an individualized plan to meet the patient's specific needs.
Patients accepted to Medical City Fort Worth's acute inpatient rehabilitation program must:
- Demonstrate the potential for improvement
- Require an inpatient rehabilitation setting with 24-hour rehabilitation nursing care
- Require at least two skilled rehabilitation services
- Demonstrate the ability to participate in three hours of therapy per day
- Be medically stable
- Have a physician's order
Physical therapy
Physical therapists help patients improve lower body strength, range of motion, coordination, balance and endurance, to achieve optimal mobility and functional skills. Physical therapists provide education and instruct patients on how to use assistive devices–such as walkers and canes–or safe mobility in their environment.
Occupational therapy
Occupational therapists help patients achieve maximum independence in their ability to perform self-care skills (bathing, dressing, etc.) as well as other daily living activities. An occupational therapist develops exercise programs to improve each patient's upper body strength, coordination and functional mobility.
Instructions and training are provided in using adaptive equipment and orthotics. The therapist may make recommendations on home and work modifications for a safer environment as needed.
Speech therapy
Speech pathologists provide evaluation and treatment of impairments in speech production, verbal and/or written expression, comprehension of speech and/or written material. The speech pathologist may evaluate and treat impairments in cognition, including attention, concentration, memory, problem solving and reasoning.
Assessment of swallowing function and recommendation for treatment are completed by the speech pathologist. Patients and family members are trained in use of strategies to facilitate communication and swallowing skills.
