Advanced treatments and procedures
From innovative care for heart arrhythmia to cutting-edge minimally invasive surgery, our heart and vascular specialists offer a wide range of options to treat complex cardiovascular conditions.
Heart arrhythmia
Whether your heart beats too fast, too slow or skips a beat, a heart arrhythmia can cause symptoms such as dizziness, shortness of breath, or a fluttering, pounding or racing feeling in your chest.
Some of the irregular heartbeat conditions we treat, include:
- Atrial fibrillation (AFib)
- Atrial flutter
- Sinus arrhythmia
- Sinus tachycardia
- Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT)
- Ventricular fibrillation
- Ventricular tachycardia (VT)
To diagnose and treat abnormal heart rhythms, we use electrophysiology studies to evaluate the heart’s electrical system. This procedure may also be used to medically induce an arrhythmia, which allows us to examine an irregular heartbeat for patients who experience symptoms intermittently.
We also offer a variety of cardiac treatment options for arrhythmia, including:
- Cardioversions
- Catheter ablation including pulse field ablations (PFA)
- Implantable cardioverter defibrillator
- Loop recorder
- Pacemaker implant and removal
- Leadless pacemakers
- Lead extractions
Interventional cardiology
Our interventional cardiologists use minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat cardiovascular conditions. Instead of requiring large chest incisions like traditional open-heart surgery, interventional cardiology procedures are done through small openings in the groin or wrist, using a catheter, and are performed in a cardiac catheterization lab.
Some of the interventional cardiology procedures we perform are:
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair
- Angioplasty and stenting
- Atherectomy
- Atrial septal defect closure
- Cardiac catheterization
- Heart bypass surgery
- Heart valve surgery
- Hypothermia therapy
- Patent foramen oval closure
- Ventricular septal defect closure
- Renal denervation
Minimally invasive heart procedures
At the Medical City Fort Worth Structural Heart Clinic, we offer some of the most advanced minimally invasive cardiac procedures available. Medical City Fort Worth was the first comprehensive valve center in Tarrant County.
We perform several heart procedures using minimally invasive techniques, including:
- Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
- Transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR),
- Mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (MTEER)
- Tricuspid transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TTEER).
Our team was the first in Tarrant County to replace an aortic valve using the TAVR procedure, which is the latest treatment for people diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis who are considered either high risk or too sick for valve replacement through open heart surgery. The TAVR procedure enables a new heart valve to be inserted into the patient's aorta via a catheter.

Cardiogenic shock resources, including ECMO
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life support machine. People who need ECMO have a severe and life-threatening illness that stops their heart or lungs from working correctly, and the device replaces the function of the heart and lungs. People are supported from a few hours to multiple days, depending on their condition and progress.
ECMO is for patients whose:
- Lungs cannot provide enough oxygen
- Lungs cannot get rid of carbon dioxide even with help from a mechanical ventilator
- Heart cannot pump enough blood to the body
ECMO machine pumps blood from the patient's body to an artificial lung (oxygenator), which adds oxygen and removes carbon dioxide. The ECMO machine returns the blood to the patient via a pump with the same force as the heart, replacing its function.
Vascular care
Our vascular surgeons and interventional cardiologists also perform peripheral vascular interventions. These procedures are used to open blocked or narrowed arteries in the legs, arms, neck, and abdomen.
The most common type of peripheral intervention we use is peripheral artery stenting, which is a minimally invasive procedure that uses an expandable metal coil to help restore blood flow into a newly opened area of your peripheral artery and prevents it from narrowing or closing again.
Some of the interventional vascular procedures we perform are:
- Carotid stenting
- Mesenteric stenting
- Peripheral vascular interventions
- Thrombectomies
Heart failure
Heart failure is a weakening of the heart muscle, making the heart unable to pump blood as well as normal, decreasing blood flow to the body resulting in symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling, and chest pain.
There are two types of heart failure:
- Systolic heart failure- in which the left ventricle doesn’t contract enough, preventing blood from being pumped out to the body.
- Diastolic heart failure- in which the ventricles do not relax after contracting, preventing enough blood from entering the heart.
Our advanced heart failure team specializes in using an individualized, patient-centered approach to treat heart failure. Medical City Fort Worth has an outpatient Heart Recovery Clinic located inside the hospital for patients needing frequent, close monitoring of their heart failure. If you are experiencing heart failure, we offer advanced care and treatment options to help you return to your normal routine more quickly.

Heart assist devices
Our ventricular assist device (VAD) program is patient-centered and equipped to handle the medical, social, psychological, and financial needs of heart patients.
Through heart failure classification improvement and a higher projected survival rate and quality of life, the program offers patients a new beginning.
Left ventricular assist device (LVAD)
In advanced heart failure, the left ventricle can become too weak to provide adequate blood flow to organs. The LVAD is a surgically implanted pump replacing the work of the heart and redirecting blood to the body.
Pumps can be used in two ways: bridge or destination. In the bridge pathway, the LVAD is used to stabilize and literally bridge you to heart transplant. In the destination pathway, the LVAD is used as the sole support as transplantation is deemed not possible.
A preferred strategy is chosen based on the health of the patient. Coordinators from the hospital are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for any needs arising after discharge.
The LVAD is portable, battery-operated and used for months to years, allowing the freedom to enjoy improved quality of life. Patients are often allowed to return to work, travel, and exercise.
For inpatient transfer requests for LVAD evaluation, please call (817) 228-6706. For an outpatient LVAD consultation request, please call (817) 233-0624 or fax a referral to (469) 713-8898.
