Healthy Weight Healthy Joints program

The Healthy Weight Healthy Joints program at Medical City Lewisville is a patient-centered approach designed to help you become more successful with joint replacement surgery. The team consists of medical weight loss specialists, dietitians, physical therapists and surgeons. This team can help you reach and sustain a healthy body weight, treat joint pain and achieve lifestyle goals.

Why is weight loss important before joint replacement?

Many orthopedic surgeons require you to have a BMI less than 40 prior to total joint replacement surgery, although a BMI less than 35 is preferred. To help you reach the BMI requirements for surgery, we offer two specialized pathways:

Medical weight loss pathway

We work with you to develop a personalized meal plan and exercise routine to meet your needs. The goal is for you to achieve successful weight loss and qualify for joint replacement surgery within three to six months.

Surgical weight loss pathway

Our surgical option helps you achieve weight loss through procedures, such as gastric sleeve and gastric bypass. The goal is for you to achieve successful weight loss and qualify for joint replacement surgery within six to 12 months.

Scheduling your bariatric surgery

We accept both physician referrals and self-referrals for bariatric surgery. Prior to the procedure, we highly encourage you to participate in our bariatric educational seminar, either online or in person.

Once you've attended an educational seminar, we will make an appointment with you for an initial consultation. During the initial consultation, you will meet with our team to discuss your surgery options and insurance requirements.
