Summer volunteer program (ages 16+)
Thank you for your interest in the Medical City Lewisville's Summer Volunteer Program
The Summer Volunteer program runs from the end of May to the beginning of August. All applications must be submitted during the month of March to be considered for the following summer. Make sure you are submitting the application between March 1 and March 31. You will be contacted in April to schedule an interview. Submitting an application does not guarantee acceptance to the program.
Application requirements
Before you submit the application, please read the requirements. There are no exceptions; please do not ask for one. Applications for this program are accepted only during the month of March.
- Students must be 16 years old by May 1
- You must provide your social security number for background check purposes
- You must agree to an in-person interview, a background check, drug and TB screening, and provide proof of required immunizations
- Must be able to speak, write, and read, English. ESL is acceptable and welcomed
- You must attend one of the two orientations offered. You will be given the exact dates of orientation when your interview is scheduled
- Orientation must be in-person. We do not offer video or streaming orientation.
- You will be given the exact dates of the summer program when your interview is scheduled
Guidelines and information
Following are guidelines and information to help you decide if you want to join us.
- Applying does not guarantee a spot in the program
- Your status as a Student Volunteer limits what you will be able to do in the hospital
- This is not a shadowing program. You will not be observing medical procedures
- This is not an internship. You will not provide patient care
- You may not translate medical conversations
- Student Volunteers are scheduled only Monday - Friday
- Shifts are Morning 8:00am – noon, Afternoon noon-4:00pm
- You are required to volunteer for one four-hour shift per week
- A second shift may be added if there is an additional opening
- You are required to volunteer at least seven out of the eight weeks
- You cannot make up a missed shift
- You will have one primary assignment for the entire summer program
- You may be asked to help in a different department depending on the need that day
- Possible duties may be: stocking supplies and nourishments, rolling silverware, answering phones, providing directions, cleaning and dusting, escorting visitors, wiping down wheelchairs, clerical, and other duties
- Cell phones should not be used during your assignment
- The student will provide their own uniform
- The Student Volunteer uniform is khaki pants, a Navy-blue polo/golf shirt (must have sleeves and a collar), and closed-toed shoes (tennis shoes are ok)
- No sandals, slides, or flip-flops are permitted
- No writing or logo on the shirt
- No visible tattoos are permitted
- Two piercings per ear only. No other visible piercings are permitted
- We do not provide letters of recommendation
- At the end of the program, you will receive a letter and a certificate verifying your hours
- The verified hours are based solely on your time sheet. Please record your hours correctly every week
