Spine revision surgery

Spine revision surgery addresses pain, stiffness or discomfort still present after a primary spine surgery, such as a ruptured disc or fracture. It can also be effective at dealing with unwanted scarring.

No one wants to think about having a second surgery for the same condition.

However, there are times when spinal revision surgery is needed. If you're experiencing pain after surgery, the orthopedic team at Medical City Spine Hospital can further diagnose your condition and recommend the best path toward eliminating your pain.

Spine revision surgery at Medical City Spine Hospital, a Medical City Dallas Facility

Surgical teams use robotics, intraoperative CT imaging systems, and computer-assisted navigation to specifically address the source of a patient’s neck or back pain without affecting healthy tissue or unrelated parts of the spine. As a result, patients experience faster recovery times, reduced risk of complications and faster return to work, sports, and other activities.

The team takes time to thoroughly review a patient’s medical history, imaging, and diagnostic tests before recommending surgical treatment. Before surgery, a patient will receive multiple expert opinions and, in some cases, we find that surgery isn’t necessary to address the neck and back pain. In that case, non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy can provide beneficial results.

Services offered

There are many options when it comes to treatment for failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS). Treatment options may include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Nerve blocks
  • Medications
  • Injections
  • Chronic pain management

Correctable structural problems are sought and, if identified, additional surgery may be recommended to address these issues. This may include facet joint or sacroiliac joint rhizotomy, spinal fusion or sacroiliac joint fusion. If no correctable cause of symptoms is identified, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) or narcotic pumps may be used for pain control. Our team will discuss with you which treatment, if any, may be best.

Telemedicine services are also available for patients who live outside the Dallas-Fort Worth area or may not be able to visit the hospital in person.

How to know if spine revision surgery is necessary

Our physicians and care team will review your treatment history, particularly the type of surgery (or surgeries) previously done and why. The team will pay special attention to the result of the previous surgery/surgeries and how the patient’s symptoms have evolved following surgery. A physical examination will also be done. X-rays, MRI and computed tomography (CT) or myelogram-CT may be ordered for further evaluation.
