What to expect before, during and after pediatric surgery
Our pediatric surgical services and outpatient unit is a special place just for kids. The staff is specially trained to make you and your child’s experience as stress-free as possible.
We provide a child-friendly atmosphere with bright surroundings, play rooms and state-of-the-art operating rooms. All of our same-day surgery and inpatient postoperative recovery rooms are private, to ensure restful healing. We also have a preoperative, mock operating room for hands-on use for children. It includes real and toy medical equipment and certified child life specialists to help children understand what to expect.
Many surgeries we provide are same-day procedures, and all pain management tools and medical equipment are specially designed to meet a child's unique needs.
Preparing for surgery
Only two adult visitors are allowed in the holding area and recovery room. Please arrange for childcare for siblings, as we limit visitation in the check-in area. You may continue to give your child any medications as usual, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor or anesthesiologist.
We ask that you leave valuables at home, but some items to bring with you to your child's surgical appointment are:
- Insurance information and IDs
- Legal documents needed for consent forms (if you are not the legal guardian)
- Any paperwork your doctor may have given you, such as lab work
- Comfort items, such as stuffed animals or, distraction items, like video games
- Your child’s medications, so we can record accurate dosages in the medical history
- Special items, such as:
- Toiletries
- A change of clothes
- Bottles and formula
- Pacifiers
Arriving at our pediatric surgery center
We request that patients arrive two hours prior to the scheduled procedure time, unless instructed differently by the hospital staff. Enter through the main entrance of the Medical City Children's Hospital tower.
Check-in is located on the second floor of the Children's Tower. The nearest parking is the open lot located between the Children's Tower and Park Central Drive. Cost for parking is $1 per hour or $4 per day.
