Pediatric ICU

The staff at Medical City Children's PICU is experienced in treating life-threatening illnesses in children. Pediatric care is delivered by highly skilled and compassionate medical professionals in state-of-the-art facilities.

The PICU is staffed 24 hours a day by a dedicated team with specialized PICU training. In addition to physicians, the PICU is staffed by:

  • Pharmacists
  • Rehabilitation therapists

Our goal is to ensure that children admitted to the PICU receive comprehensive care in a calming environment, from a multidisciplinary team of professionals.


PICU treatments and services

The PICU at Medical City Children's hospital provides a range of treatments for children needing advanced care. Some of the treatments and services we offer include:

  • Access to a critical care response team (CCRT)—The CCRT is a dedicated group of individuals in a PICU that has specialized training in stabilizing and treating critically ill patients.
  • Flow anesthesia ventilator—This machine helps regulate the flow and dosage of anesthesia for precision during procedures.
  • High frequency oscillatory ventilation—This machine helps control pressure in children with respiratory dysfunction.
  • Nitric oxide—This is used to help PICU patients experiencing respiratory failure.
  • Helium-oxygen treatments—These mixtures can be used to help children who are experiencing acute asthma attacks.

Dedicated transport team

The transport team cares for patients on their way to the hospital from cities and small communities in Texas and across the country. They provide a full spectrum of care during transport by ambulance, helicopter or airplane. The transport team is staffed with registered nurses specially trained in the care and stabilization of pediatric and neonatal patients.

Getting care at our PICU

Patients admitted to the PICU will have first been admitted to the ER at Medical City Children's Hospital. Individuals arriving at the ER can follow marked signs to enter the hospital campus at the intersection of Park Central Drive and Merit Drive.

The Medical City Children's ER has its own space within Medical City Dallas' ER, though the adult and pediatric patients have separate waiting and treatment rooms. Street and garage parking is available around the hospital campus, and there is a parking garage directly adjacent to the ER entrance. Parking in either garage or lot costs $1 per hour or $4 for an entire day. Street parking is metered.
