Wounds come from a variety of different medical conditions, and they don't heal for many reasons, including poor diabetes management, inadequate circulation, vascular disease and immobility.
If a wound is not properly managed or addressed quickly enough, it can result in the need for amputation.
Outpatient wound care program
If you are a candidate for our outpatient program, the wound care center will immediately work with you and your doctor to deliver the following:
- Assessment and ongoing care from a highly skilled team of wound care specialists
- Intensive plan of care to bring you the most appropriate and effective treatments
- Advanced therapies, such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy
- Education for you and your family to help healing happen at home, including resources related to prevention, nutrition, hygiene and more
- Ongoing communication and collaboration with you and your doctor so you can each remain informed about your progress
What to expect at your wound care appointment
After referral to the wound care center, you will undergo a thorough diagnostic examination to identify the type of wound you have and the underlying problems causing the wound. These tests may include laboratory evaluation, radiology, transcutaneous oxygen testing or vascular studies.
The initial appointment consists of a full assessment to determine the source of the wound, the appropriate classification and size of the wound, your overall health status and your ability to comply with the therapies you need.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for wounds and vascular disease
HBOT is a noninvasive procedure during which the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen while fully enclosed in a specially designed chamber at increased atmospheric pressure.
With an oxygen-rich environment, the body's natural wound-healing mechanisms are able to function more effectively, drastically speeding up the healing process of chronic wounds.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used to support healing in conditions involving traumatic injury, infection, inflammation or edema.
Benefits of HBOT therapy
Our hyperbaric oxygen chambers use the latest technology and include a patient-friendly pressurization alternative to minimize complications from middle ear and sinus barotraumas (injuries caused by increased air or water pressure) without increasing compression time. HBOT therapy also allows:
- An increase in oxygen concentration in all body tissues
- Growth of new blood vessels to locations with decreased circulation
- Treatment of new infections
At Medical City Plano, we offer a limb preservation program to help patients preserve mobility and prevent the need for amputation. Program specialists provide advanced care for non-healing wounds and help reduce pain for patients with acute and chronic conditions.
