Low Sodium Diet

Sodium is a mineral found in many foods. The human body requires sodium for many important functions including muscle contraction and water balance; however, too much sodium can contribute to multiple health problems. Limiting sodium in the diet to 2,000 mg daily may be beneficial for individuals who have congestive heart failure, severe water retention (edema) or those attempting to lower high blood pressure.

  • Just one teaspoon of salt contains nearly 2,400 mg of sodium.
  • Avoid foods with 300 mg or more of sodium such as: canned soups, canned vegetables, processed meats and cheeses, condiments, boxed meals, instant gravy/sauce mixes, dry rice and pasta mixes and many snack foods.
  • Include plenty of whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet.

How does your "Room Service" work?

Upon admission, your Room Service Host or nurse will provide you with a menu tailored to your diet. If your diet order changes throughout your stay, your Room Service Host or nurse will provide you with a new menu that reflects your new diet.
