Fat-Restricted Diet
A fat-restricted diet limits the total amount of fat consumed per day. When reading a food label, look for phrases such as low fat, nonfat and fat free.
- When choosing protein sources, focus on very lean selections, such as chicken breast, turkey breast, egg whites and leaner cuts of red meat such as loin and round.
- When preparing meats, use lean cooking methods such as baking, boiling, broiling and grilling instead of frying.
- Include plenty of whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet.
- Avoid avocados, nuts, olives and coconut because these items contain fat.
- Dairy products should include items made from skim milk.
- Sweets should be consumed in moderation. Choose from fat-free or low-fat items.
