Milestone in construction of Garland ER

Off-campus emergency room will open in April 2024 and care for both adult and pediatric patients.

Dallas, TX — Medical City Dallas leaders recently gathered to celebrate a major milestone in the construction of a new off-campus emergency room. Pre-constructed modules that will make up the main structure of the 11,000-square-foot facility were delivered to the site of Medical City ER Garland. The full-service ER is expected to open in April 2024.

Over the next few weeks, workers will tie the Medical City Garland ER modules together, complete flooring and finish utility work.

“Having the sections built offsite and then shipped here increases efficiency, speed of construction and lessens the impact of our project on the environment and the local community,” Medical City Dallas CEO Chris Mowan says.

The modules were built in Alabama and shipped by 18-wheelers to Garland, where the ER will be located on five acres at the southeast corner of Jupiter Road and Buckingham Road. The pre-built units make up the walls and main roof sections of the facility’s different exam rooms, treatment areas and lobby. The pre-assembled sections, each weighing up to 65,000 pounds and about the size of a two-car garage, were lifted off 17 tractor-trailers and carefully set into place by a massive, 550-ton crane.

The ER will be a full-service emergency room staffed with board-certified emergency physicians and open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. About seven miles from the main Medical City Dallas and Medical City Children’s Hospital campus, it will include 10 private patient treatment rooms, including a trauma room, a full laboratory and a radiology suite with X-ray and CT imaging. The ER will treat people of all ages, including pediatric patients.

"We are pleased to bring much-needed emergency services to the city of Garland and surrounding areas," Mowan says. "We’ll have on-call specialists from Medical City Dallas and Medical City Children’s Hospital able to consult with the Medical City ER Garland staff and facilitate admissions to our main facilities if additional care is required. This connects this community to high-level care right here in their own neighborhood."

Features of the facility will include:

  • Private treatment rooms
  • Child-friendly pediatric treatment rooms
  • Extensive imaging services
  • On-site lab and blood bank
  • An EMS lounge for first responders

This expansion is part of Medical City Healthcare’s major capital investment initiative of more than $1.5 billion spent or committed over five years, which includes building expansions, facility enhancements and leading-edge technology.
