What causes obesity?
The underlying causes of obesity are multiple and complex. It is not simply a result of overeating. In fact, research shows that, in many cases, morbid obesity has a genetic basis.
Before weight-loss surgery, the bariatric team takes time to sit down with you and determine the underlying causes of your obesity. This ensures we can customize your treatment options to help you be as successful as possible in reaching and maintaining a healthy weight.
Types of bariatric surgery we offer
To qualify for bariatric surgery, you must have a body weight that is 100 pounds above the average healthy weight for your age, height, etc. You can also qualify if you have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40 or a BMI of at least 35 with an obesity-related health condition.

Sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve surgery)
During a sleeve gastrectomy, the surgeon creates a small stomach sleeve with a stapling device and removes the separated stomach portion. The smaller stomach pouch restricts the amount of food you can eat. The procedure also reduces the "hunger hormone" (ghrelin) because it is produced in the removed portion of the stomach.
Gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) surgery
During a gastric bypass, the surgeon creates a small stomach pouch. Then, the small intestine is divided beyond the duodenum to connect to the newly formed stomach pouch. This surgery is known as "Roux-en-Y" because the small stomach pouch connects to the Roux limb of the intestine in a y-shaped way, bypassing a region (your natural stomach) of the digestive tract.
Bariatric revision surgery
If you have experienced a complication or inadequate weight loss after bariatric surgery, you may qualify for a revision procedure. Reasons for a revision may include:
- Stomach pouch has stretched
- Intestine has increased intake ability
- Gastric band has slipped
