Minimally invasive GERD treatment

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, affects one in five U.S. adults and occurs when stomach acid and bile flow back from the stomach into the esophagus. It can cause symptoms such as heartburn, chest pain, regurgitation, sore throat and a cough. If left untreated, GERD can lead to serious complications, including injury to the lining of the esophagus and esophageal cancers.

Conventional treatments for acid reflux symptoms, such as antacids and acid suppression drugs, are not always the solution and may be ineffective for some patients. If these treatments haven't worked for you, it may be time to explore minimally invasive GERD treatment.

For those suffering from GERD, our specialists perform a minimally invasive procedure known as transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF). As suggested by the name, the procedure is done without incisions. Instead, the procedure is performed by gently guiding an endoscope and the TIF device down your throat and into your stomach. The TIF device is carefully placed at the top of your stomach, creating a fold (secured by plastic fasteners that remain in the body), preventing stomach acid from leaking into the esophagus.

In most cases, the surgery is considered an outpatient procedure done under general anesthesia and patients typically go home the same day or the next.
