Medical City Achieves Highest Honor in Nursing Excellence
Medical City became the first hospital in Dallas-Fort Worth to achieve the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet® recognition for a third time. Medical City achieved its original designation in 2003, becoming the first North Texas hospital to do so.
“We are just delighted and honored to be among the elite,” said Chief Nursing Officer Carol Gregory. “We couldn’t ever have accomplished this if we didn’t have each and every one of us throughout the organization focused on quality care for our patients. “
The Magnet Recognition Program® for Nursing Excellence is based quality indicators and nursing practice standards. Magnet recognition seeks to measure nursing indicators and patient outcomes, and to recognize the best nursing services and quality patient care. Only 50 hospitals across the world have achieved a third time designation.
“We’re not going to rest on our laurels,” said Gregory. “We’re going to take it even higher, because that’s what a Magnet organization does. We’ve done it three times, and now we’re going after our fourth.”
What factors make Medical City a Magnet-caliber hospital?
- Ensuring that nurses have a voice in shaping hospital best practices and patient care.
- Cultivating a team-focused, collaborative approach to patient care.
- Creating and sustaining a work environment that supports, values, rewards and recognizes professional nurses.
- Committing to recruiting, retaining and training the very best nurses.
- Appointing a chief nurse officer who is involved in hospital operations at the executive level.
- Medical City Children's Hospital
This program, like accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, is entirely voluntary. A hospital aspiring to the Magnet recognition designation must meet 96 standards and undergo intense scrutiny of every aspect of a hospital's nursing staff, procedures and patient interactions. Magnet hospitals also must be reevaluated every four years in order to retain the designation.
